How To Make A Shaded Petal Plug
written by: Valerie Hollis Without Frames
Step 1
To begin, you will need to start with a Continuous Skinner Blend. (To learn how to make one of these, please see "How To Make A Continuous Skinner Blend.")
Step 2
Trim the uneven edges.
Step 3
Fold the blend in thirds so that the darkest and lightest ends are at the top and bottom.
Step 4
Here is a top-view of the folded edge.
Step 5
Pass this, light OR dark end first, through the thickest setting of your pasta machine (#1 on an Atlas). Then pass it through a medium setting (#3 on an Atlas). Then pass it through a thin setting (#5 on an Atlas). The idea is to lengthen this into a long, thin strip as shown in the next Step.
Step 6
Once you've passed it through the thin setting on the pasta machine, it should look something like this (I've loosely folded it in half for the picture).
Step 7
Form a log of clay that is the same color as the darkest shade of your Continuous Blend. Mine is about 3/4 of an inch in diameter and as long as the strip is wide.
Step 8
Trim the uneven edge from the dark end of the strip.
Step 9
Lay the trimmed edge of the strip over the log of clay. Then, begin accordion-folding the strip back-and-forth over the log of clay.
Step
10
Continue accordion folding. Make each fold a little bit narrower than the last.

Here is a side-view.

Here you can see how I am graduating each fold as I go.
Step
13
Once you've folded until you've reached the light end of the strip, trim the uneven edge before folding it in.

Here is a picture of my Shaded Petal Plug. ... A wee bit crooked perhaps...but this will only add to the character of the flower! :-D
