Making a Shaded Jellyroll Cane

Step 1

To make a Shaded Jellyroll Cane, you will need a to make a Graduated Skinner Blend that has been rolled out on the thickest setting of the pasta machine.  (To learn how to make one of these, please see "How To Make A Graduated Skinner Blend.").

Step 2

Place the Graduated Blend on top of another sheet of clay that has been rolled out on a medium setting of the pasta machine (#3 on an Atlas).  In this case, I chose a gray sheet of clay; however, for best results, you may want to chose a color that will best provide contrast to your blend.

Step 3

Roll the acrylic brayer lightly over the surface from the middle outwards.  This will ensure good contact between the layers and remove any air pockets.

Step 4

Trim the uneven edge.

Step 5

Now the stack should look like this.

Step 6

Pass it, trimmed edge first, through the thickest setting of the pasta machine (#1 on an Atlas).

Step 7

Now it should look like this.

Step 8

Trim the uneven edge.

Step 9

Begin rolling up the stack.

Step 10

When you arrive at the other end, trim the uneven edge at an angle as shown in this picture.

Step 11

Once trimmed, continue rolling to the end and seam the edge.

Step 12

Reduce the cane to the desired size.  Do this by compressing it from the center outwards and by rolling it on your work surface.

Step 13

Once reduced, cut the end of the cane.

Step 14

Here's a picture of what mine looks like.
