What You Should Know... about making a "Celtic Knot Cane"
~ This tutorial demonstrates how to make a cane that reflects an outline for a basic 4-sided "Celtic Knot," or square knot.
~ Difficulty Level:
I made every attempt to document the making of this cane in a step-by-step, easy-to-follow fashion so that it could be utilized by the Beginner as well as the Intermediate and the Advanced. I do recommend reading through the tutorial in its entirety before beginning it. I think some of the Steps in Part I are a bit confusing until you read through Part II. At that point, the cane begins to take shape and the nature of each part (and how it will fit into the cane) becomes more self-evident.
~ I tried a number of different ways to make this cane and decided to document this particular design for the tutorial because it shows the basic shape of the knot. Once you can visualize how to make the basic shape of the outline, you can change the overall look of the cane by adding a different background color or by using blends in the cane to create the illusion of shadow and depth.
~ Below are some examples of my other attempts at Celtic Knot Canes:
~ Lastly, I found it very useful to draw the knots on paper before attempting to cane them in clay. Below are links to diagrams that I drew of 2 knots that should be helpful if you'd like to learn how to draw them:
